Joseph Majeesh Urges Employers to Rethink Recruitment Models to Address Labor Shortages and Empower Local Job Seekers

Joseph Majeesh, Director of Champion Staffing International, is calling on Alberta employers, especially in the oil, gas, construction, and industrial sectors, to make skilled trade jobs more accessible to underrepresented workers, new immigrants, and youth. He believes better recruitment practices and outreach could help address growing labor shortages in the province.

“Right now, Alberta has thousands of open jobs in skilled trades—welders, pipefitters, millwrights, heavy equipment operators,” said Joseph Majeesh. “But at the same time, we have young people, newcomers, and unemployed workers who don’t know how to get into those roles or don’t have a clear path.”

According to the Government of Alberta, the province is projected to face a shortfall of over 60,000 skilled trade workers by 2030 due to retirements and growth in infrastructure and energy sectors. Alberta also welcomes tens of thousands of newcomers each year, many of whom bring relevant experience but lack local credentials or employer networks.

Majeesh argues that solving this problem requires more than just job postings.

“We need to rethink how we connect people to opportunity,” he said. “That means offering better mentorship, clearer training pipelines, and partnerships with local organizations who work with youth, immigrants, and career changers.”

Through his own firm, Champion Staffing, Majeesh has worked with oil and gas leaders like Fluor, SNC Lavalin, and ADNOC to recruit both local and international workers. But he believes Alberta can do more to create a homegrown solution.

“This isn’t just about filling jobs,” he added. “It’s about building stronger communities and making sure no one is left behind just because they didn’t have the right contact or credential on paper.”

Majeesh is encouraging businesses across Alberta to:

  • Partner with local colleges and community organizations for outreach

  • Simplify job requirements and provide in-house training where possible

  • Offer internships or job shadowing to help people get their foot in the door

  • Sponsor certification programs for those with experience but no papers

“There’s talent in every corner of this province,” he said. “We just have to be willing to go find it—and support it.”

He also wants job seekers to know that their background doesn’t have to limit them.

“If you’ve got the work ethic and the willingness to learn, there’s a place for you in this economy,” Majeesh emphasized. “Reach out, ask questions, take small steps—but don’t count yourself out.”
