Tell us about The American Martyr.
The American Martyr delves into the harrowing journey of Brian Brample, a teenager whose life takes a drastic turn when the government reinstates the draft to support a losing war overseas. Forced into a conflict with a near-certain death toll, Brian and his friends stage a radical protest—a mass suicide meant to send a clear message: they refuse to be pawns in Washington’s game.
But when Brian survives, he becomes a scapegoat, vilified by the government and idolized by a generation desperate for change. Thrust into a storm of media scrutiny and legal battles, Brian finds himself at the center of a national reckoning, with his every move shaping the future of a fractured society. With the rest of his life stuck between trials and prison, Brian’s future, life, and mind unravel before him.
The American Martyr is my exploration of how society constructs narratives that can either uplift or destroy lives, shaping perceptions of courage and sacrifice while revealing the devastating consequences of standing against systemic corruption. It delves into the psychological toll of being cast as either a monster or a hero, and the profound impact such narrative control has on individuals and society as a whole.
What inspired you to write The American Martyr?
The American Martyr is a story I’ve carried for over twenty years, shaped by my reflections on how the media wields the power to define narratives—casting individuals as either heroes or villains. From politicians to public figures like George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden, Bill Clinton, David Koresh, Michael Jackson, and O.J. Simpson, these cultural touch points inspired me to explore how stories are spun and the profound impact this can have on our lives.
At its core, this book is about making people feel something—whether that be the pain of the plight of the characters or elation for their victories. My goal is to take readers on a journey that stirs something within them, making them feel alive and connected to experiences beyond their own. The American Martyr challenges perspectives and invites readers to confront the power of storytelling itself.
How did you feel when you found out you received a Book Excellence Award?
After writing over a dozen books, receiving a Book Excellence Award feels truly rewarding. These awards not only celebrate the dedication and craft behind my work, but also highlight the impact the story has on readers. Being acknowledged by such a respected program brings credibility and visibility, opening doors to new audiences and opportunities. It’s an honor that reinforces the purpose behind every word I write.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
My background in economics and decades-long career in analytics have profoundly shaped my approach to storytelling. I’ve always been an inquisitive person, driven to understand and rationalize the “why” behind every action. This fuels my desire to delve deep into my characters, dissecting their motives and the decisions they make. At its core, my writing explores people and their choices—what drives them, what defines them, and how their actions ripple through their lives and the lives of others. It’s this blend of curiosity and analysis that gives my stories their depth and authenticity.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
My writing is about growth, understanding, and the complexities of the human experience. I want readers to leave my books not only entertained but with a deeper sense of empathy for themselves, others, and the world around them. With The American Martyr, my hope is that readers walk away questioning the narratives we so often accept without scrutiny—whether it’s someone being labeled a villain before a trial or celebrities who are put on pedestals when we don’t really know them. It challenges readers to reflect on what truly makes a hero or a monster, urging them not to blindly idolize or condemn anyone. In this way, my goal is to spark meaningful thought and reflection about the society we live in and the stories we choose to believe.
